Is a private tour in Portugal really worth it?

People ask whether a private tour in Portugal is worth the money. It is a fair question, and the honest answer depends on what you think you are buying.

If you think you are buying a car with a driver, then no — you can rent a car, or take a coach, and spend less. What you are actually buying is the day itself, adapted to the people travelling in it.

What changes when the day is yours

• The itinerary is fully customisable before you travel, and still adjustable on the day.
• No checklist tourism — we are not ticking off stops to satisfy a brochure.
• No rigid schedule and no waiting for other passengers to come back to the vehicle.
• The pace follows you. Slow mornings and long lunches are allowed.
• If you want another half hour at a palace, you take it.
• If you unexpectedly want to stop at a beach, we stop at the beach.
• Pick-up and drop-off at your own accommodation or address.

That last point sounds minor until you have stood on a corner at 7:30 in the morning looking for a meeting point in a city you do not know.

Who it suits

Couples, because the day can be quiet or full depending on the mood. Families, because children set the rhythm whether you plan for it or not, and a private day absorbs that easily. And two or three couples travelling together as friends — that group size works particularly well, since everyone knows each other and the conversation carries through the day.

That sentence is the centre of how I work. Driving is how we get between places. It is not the service.

The service is context: why a town looks the way it does, what happened here and who it happened to, why the food changes over sixty kilometres, what people actually do for a living in the places you are photographing. Portugal is small enough to cross quickly and layered enough that crossing it quickly tells you very little.

I want people to feel Portuguese when they visit Portugal. Not to observe it from a window — to eat where we eat, understand what they are looking at, and leave with something more durable than photographs.

When a private tour is not the right answer

If you are staying in central Lisbon for three days and want to wander, you do not need me. The city rewards walking and public transport handles the rest. Private touring earns its value when the day involves distance, timing, several sites, or people with different energy levels in the same group.
