The Setúbal Peninsula, Lisbon's overlooked neighbour

Cross the 25 de Abril bridge and within half an hour you are in the Setúbal Peninsula: chalk and clay soils, the Serra da Arrábida rising green above a turquoise coast, and a region that has fed and watered Lisbon for centuries — yet remains almost unknown to visitors.

This is not a winery-hopping tour. It is a day that moves through the peninsula the way it deserves: its fishing culture in the morning, its coastline late morning, its seafood at midday, and one excellent winery experience in the Azeitão wine country in the afternoon.

Setúbal and the Livramento Market

Setúbal is a working fishing city, and its Livramento Market is one of the great food markets of Portugal — famous for its tiled interior and for stalls that tell you exactly what this coast eats. The fish section alone is an education: cuttlefish, sea bass, sardines and whatever the boats brought in that morning.

We give you time to walk it properly, with a local's commentary on what you are looking at and what it becomes on the plate. It sets the tone for the rest of the day.

The Arrábida drive — part of the experience

The Serra da Arrábida is a limestone ridge that drops straight into the sea, protected as a natural park. The road along the top has views over Portinho da Arrábida and Galapos — beaches so clear they look Caribbean — and a 16th-century convent clinging to the slope below.

We drive it slowly. This stretch is not transport between attractions; it is one of the attractions, with carefully selected stops for viewpoints, photography and the Atlantic scenery.

Lunch in Sesimbra

Sesimbra is a fishing town below a Moorish castle, and the fish comes off the boats in the morning and onto the grill at lunchtime. We lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant — relaxed, unhurried and appropriately timed, because the afternoon winery experience starts at 14:30.

Grilled fish is the obvious choice; choco frito — fried cuttlefish — is the Setúbal speciality and worth trying at least once.

The Azeitão wine country

In the afternoon we continue to the Azeitão wine country for one carefully selected winery visit and tasting — the main wine experience of the day. The winery is chosen according to availability and the best fit for your group; José Maria da Fonseca is one of the region's historic houses and a possibility, but we never promise a specific estate.

Moscatel de Setúbal is the region's signature: a fortified muscat, aged in wood, tasting of orange peel, dried apricot and honey without ever being cloying. The twenty-year-old versions are extraordinary and cost a fraction of comparable dessert wines elsewhere. Castelão — locally called Periquita — makes the classic Setúbal red: firm, savoury, good with grilled meat.

Azeitão itself gives you two more things worth stopping for: its famous sheep's cheese, ripened until you eat it with a spoon, and the hand-painted tile workshops.

Best time to come

April to June is glorious: green hills, wildflowers, comfortable temperatures. September brings the harvest and the smell of fermenting must in the cellars. The market is liveliest earlier in the week and in the morning — we plan around it.

Why private, and why a driver

The obvious reason is that nobody in your group has to stay sober or count glasses. The less obvious one is access and pacing: the small estates that make the interesting wine do not take walk-ins, and knowing how long each part of the day actually takes is what makes the whole thing feel relaxed rather than rushed.

About eight hours from a Lisbon pick-up. Exact timing can occasionally shift depending on traffic, market conditions, restaurant service and winery availability — that flexibility is part of a private day.

Tasting fees and lunch are paid directly on the day, so you only pay for what you choose. Bottles can be bought at the winery and we carry them for you; several producers ship internationally. Tell us in advance if anyone in the group does not drink or has dietary requirements.
