What five days in Portugal can realistically cover

Portugal looks small on a map and is deceptively varied on the ground. Five days lets you travel the classic south-to-north line — Lisbon, Sintra, the Silver Coast, Coimbra, Porto and the Douro — with time to actually stop, rather than a highlight reel seen through a window.

The route is designed around driving times of no more than two to three hours on the days you move, and no driving at all on the days you explore. You unpack twice, not five times.

Day by day, and why in that order

Day one is Lisbon: Belém and the river in the morning, Alfama and the viewpoints in the afternoon, dinner recommendation in the evening. Day two is Sintra and the coast, out early to beat the palace queues and back along Cabo da Roca and Cascais.

Day three moves north through Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha, ending in Coimbra — three very different stops that break the drive naturally. Day four gives you Coimbra's university in the morning, the canals and painted boats of Aveiro at lunchtime, and arrival in Porto for the evening.

Day five is Porto and the Douro. Depending on your flight and your preferences, we either spend the day in the city and a port cellar, or push inland to the vineyards for a tasting above the river.

The regions you pass through

Estremadura and the Silver Coast: Atlantic beaches, monasteries and walled towns, all within ninety minutes of the capital.

The Centro region around Coimbra: Portugal's first capital and its oldest university, founded in 1290, with the gilded Joanina Library that stops everyone in the doorway. Nearby, the Roman town of Conímbriga has the finest mosaics in the country.

The north: Porto, granite and tiles and the Douro's mouth; and then the valley itself, terraced by hand and demarcated since 1756.

Where you sleep

We suggest hotels rather than book them blind — a small boutique in Lisbon's Príncipe Real or Chiado, something with a view in Coimbra, and in Porto either the Ribeira waterfront or the quieter Cedofeita side. If you would rather we handle the reservations entirely, we can.

Portugal's pousadas — historic convents and castles converted into hotels — are worth one night on a five-day trip. Óbidos and Coimbra both have good ones.

Eating your way north

The food changes as clearly as the landscape. Lisbon means bacalhau, sardines and pastéis de nata. Around Nazaré it is seafood and caldeirada. Coimbra brings roast suckling pig at Mealhada, and Aveiro the ovos moles, sweet egg cream in a wafer shell.

In Porto: francesinha for the brave, tripas à moda do Porto for the curious, and port at a Vila Nova de Gaia cellar. In the Douro, long lunches above the river. We book tables where booking matters.

What a private multi-day tour actually removes

No rental car, no motorway tolls to work out, no parking in medieval towns, no train connections, no luggage handling between stations, and no navigating in a language you do not read. Your bags stay in the vehicle. Your guide is the same person on day five as on day one, which means by the middle of the trip we already know what you like.

It also means the plan can change. If Coimbra grips you, we stay longer and shorten Aveiro. If the weather turns, we swap a coastal morning for a museum.

Best time of year for a five-day trip

April to June and September to October are ideal: warm, long days and manageable crowds. July and August are hot and busy but work well with early starts. Winter is quiet and cheap, and the north can be wet, so we build in more indoor alternatives.

Practical information

The price covers the vehicle, the driver-guide, all fuel, tolls, parking and driver expenses for the full five days. Hotels, meals and entrance tickets are yours to choose — we recommend, reserve and advise.

Start in Lisbon and end in Porto, or reverse it to match your flights. We can also collect and drop off at either airport, and store luggage in the vehicle on travel days.
