The whole country, at a human pace

Ten days is the length at which Portugal stops requiring compromises. You get the north's wine and granite, the centre's monasteries and university towns, Lisbon and Sintra, the wide horizons of the Alentejo and, at the end, the Algarve coast — with the same driver-guide from the first morning to the last.

It works as a north-to-south line, which means you never double back. Most guests fly into Porto and out of Faro or Lisbon, and we build the whole trip around those two fixed points.

The north: Porto, the Douro and the Minho

Porto opens the trip: the Ribeira waterfront, São Bento station's tiled hall, and a port cellar across the river in Gaia. Then the Douro Valley — UNESCO-listed, demarcated since 1756, terraced by hand into schist — for two quinta tastings and a long lunch above the river.

North of that lies the Minho, the greenest part of Portugal. Guimarães is where the country was founded in the 12th century and still carries the sign that says so. Braga is its ecclesiastical heart, with the baroque stairway of Bom Jesus climbing the hillside in zigzags. Vinho verde is drunk young and slightly fizzy here, straight from the pergola-trained vines you pass on the road.

The centre: Coimbra, Aveiro and the Silver Coast

Coimbra's university, founded in 1290, holds the gilded Joanina Library and a student tradition that still involves black capes. Aveiro adds canals, moliceiro boats and its protected ovos moles.

Coming south, the Silver Coast delivers Nazaré's big-wave cliff, the gothic monastery of Batalha built to mark independence, the Sanctuary of Fátima, and Óbidos inside its medieval walls — four completely different Portugals within an hour of each other.

Lisbon and Sintra

Two full days in the capital region. Lisbon gets Belém's monuments and pastéis, Alfama's alleys and Fado, the Baixa grid rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and the viewpoints that make the city.

Sintra follows: Pena Palace on its ridge, the tunnels and Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira, then Cabo da Roca where the continent ends and the coast road home through Cascais.

The Alentejo: the quietest and most surprising region

East of Lisbon the country empties out into cork oak plains, whitewashed villages and enormous skies. Évora, a UNESCO city, holds a Roman temple in its centre and a chapel lined with the bones of five thousand monks, above a door that reads: 'We bones that are here await yours.'

Monsaraz, a fortified village on a hill above the largest artificial lake in Europe, is one of the darkest sky reserves on the continent. Alentejo wine — big, warm, generous reds — is at its best here, and the cooking, based on bread, pork, coriander and clams, is the most distinctive in Portugal.

The Algarve finale

The last stretch is coastal. Lagos and the sculpted cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, the Benagil sea cave when the water allows, grilled fish in a working harbour, and then Sagres and Cape St. Vincent — the south-western tip of Europe, where Henry the Navigator gathered his pilots and where the sunset closes the trip properly.

How ten days is paced

Long drives are avoided by design. Most travel days are under three hours and always broken by a stop worth making; several days involve no driving at all. Hotel changes are kept to five or six over ten days, with two-night stays wherever the region rewards it.

Rest is built in. There is usually a free morning in Porto or the Alentejo where nothing is scheduled and you decide over breakfast.

Food and wine, region by region

Ten days lets you taste the whole country: vinho verde and roast kid in the Minho, port and northern beef in the Douro, suckling pig at Mealhada, ovos moles in Aveiro, seafood on the Silver Coast, bacalhau and nata in Lisbon, açorda and Alentejo reds in Évora, cataplana and grilled dourada in the Algarve.

Practical information

The price covers the private vehicle, driver-guide, complete itinerary design in advance, and all fuel, tolls, parking and driver expenses for ten days. Hotels, entrances and meals are chosen by you, with our recommendations and booking help.

Flights are usually into Porto and out of Faro or Lisbon; we collect and deliver at either end. Luggage stays in the vehicle throughout, so no station transfers and no rental car.
