What the extra two days buy you

The difference between five and seven days is not two more sights. It is a second day in Lisbon, a proper day in Porto rather than an evening, and a full day in the Douro Valley instead of a rushed detour.

It also buys margin. Rain on Tuesday stops being a problem when Wednesday is flexible. A long lunch does not cost you a monastery. Guests who take seven days almost never wish they had taken five.

The week, day by day

Days one and two are Lisbon and Sintra — the capital's riverfront and old quarters, then the palaces in the hills and the Atlantic at Cabo da Roca and Cascais.

Day three moves north through Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha to Coimbra. Day four is Coimbra's university and library, then Aveiro's canals, arriving in Porto in the late afternoon.

Day five is Porto itself: Ribeira, the Bolhão market, Livraria Lello if you want it, and a port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Day six is the Douro Valley — the N222 river road, two quinta tastings and lunch on a terrace above the water.

Day seven returns south, either straight to Lisbon or through the green Minho and Guimarães, depending on your flight time. Some guests instead extend their stay in Porto and we simply hand them over at their hotel.

Porto, properly

Porto is granite, iron and tile — a harder, more industrious city than Lisbon and beloved for it. The old Ribeira waterfront is a UNESCO site, the Dom Luís I bridge was built by a student of Eiffel, and São Bento station's entrance hall is covered in twenty thousand azulejos telling Portuguese history.

Port houses across the river in Gaia have been ageing wine in those cool lodges since the 18th century, many founded by British families whose names are still on the doors. A cellar visit here makes far more sense after you have seen the valley — or before, as a primer.

Coimbra, Aveiro and the middle of the country

Coimbra was Portugal's capital before Lisbon and holds one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world. The Joanina Library, finished in 1728, is gilded, cool and protected from insects by a colony of bats that hunt in it at night — a detail nobody believes until they hear it from the guide.

Aveiro, an hour north, is a lagoon town of canals and moliceiro boats, painted stripes and Art Nouveau facades. Its ovos moles are protected by EU origin status. Nearby Costa Nova has the striped fishermen's houses everyone photographs.

Food across a week

Seven days gives you the full spread: Lisbon's bacalhau and pastéis de nata, Silver Coast seafood, Mealhada's roast suckling pig, Aveiro's ovos moles, Porto's francesinha, and the northern cooking of the Douro — posta de vitela, roast kid, Serra da Estrela cheese.

We build in one or two special meals — a Michelin-listed table in Porto, or a quinta lunch in the valley — and leave the rest to appetite and mood.

Hotels and where to base yourself

Three bases across the week: two nights in Lisbon, one in Coimbra, three in Porto — or a Douro wine hotel for one of those nights, which is worth the extra move. We suggest properties at your preferred level and handle reservations if you would like.

Alternatives and add-ons

Prefer the south? We can swap Coimbra and Aveiro for Évora and the Alentejo, adding Roman temples, marble towns and big red wines. Want more coast? The Silver Coast can absorb a whole extra day. Travelling in September? A harvest day in the Douro is worth reshaping the week around.

Why one guide for the whole week matters

By day three you have stopped explaining yourself. Your guide knows you would rather walk than queue, that one of you is vegetarian, and that the eight o'clock start is not happening tomorrow. That accumulated understanding is exactly what a coach tour or a series of separate local guides cannot give you.

Practically, it also means one point of contact for restaurant bookings, tickets, weather changes and the small emergencies that travel produces.

Practical information

The price includes the vehicle, driver-guide, fuel, tolls, parking and all driver expenses for seven days. Hotels, meals and entrances are booked to your taste, by us or by you.

The itinerary can start in Lisbon and end in Porto, or the reverse, and we collect from and deliver to either airport.
